Swimming Aha! Moment The 1st Time was Not a Charm... |

We asked our March Newsletter readers to share stories of their best "Aha!" moments that led to a breakthrough in open water swimming. The winning submission was sent to us by LifeSport athlete Paul Barton. Please read Paul's story.
"I've always been comfortable with swimming, in a pool that is as I was a lifeguard during my high school years. After a 20 year absence from the pool, I joined a masters swim group in preparation for my first triathlon race, which was July 1995. In the months leading up to the race, I built up the endurance to be able to comfortably complete the 1 km swim course.
The day of the race arrived and I anxiously stood on the beach with 150 other triathletes. I sensed something was different because I was one of the few without a wet suit. Suddenly, the starting gun went off and the once calm water was instantly turned into a big washing machine with water, arms, and legs thrashing about. The one thing nobody told me about a triathlon swim start was how challenging it can be to try to find open water when 150 other swimmers are trying to do the same. I played fairly competitive hockey for many years and I don't recall getting hit and banged as much as that first triathlon swim start!!
After only 100 meters of swimming, if you could call it that, I had to stop and do an easy breast stroke to let the pack get ahead of me. Once the pack went ahead I was able to calm down and complete the swim, then went on to finish that first triathlon. Talking to other participants after the race I quickly learned that the congestion at the swim start is normal, and since then, I've never been worried about getting banged around in the swim start, in fact I expect it. If anything, this forced me to work hard on the swim so I can try to get ahead of the pack at the start to minimize some of the congestion."
Congratulations Paul and thank you all who entered!!!
