For many, selection into the Ford Ironman World Championships is a yearly goal, however there are only three ways of earning a spot there. Either a top placing in one's Age Group at a full Ironman or winning an age group at select 70.3 races will get a berth. For those wishing to leave it to chance, there are lottery spots available for 200 lucky people!

 

Below are the 17 LifeSport athletes, with their coaches, from around the world who will toe the start line (or tread water before the cannon fires) in Kona this October, and how they got to Hawaii.

 

Coach Lance:

Amanda  Stevens – Boulder CO Qualified via the Pro Ranking System, her first Kona, one of the top swimmers in the sport!

Nell Stephenson– Los Angeles, CA Qualified at 70.3 Honu. (6th overall amongst the pros)

Laura Keefe – Halifax, NS. Qualified at IM Florida during her debut Ironman

Ashley Naelon – Davidson, NC. Qualified at IM Louisville, won her AG, first trip to Kona

Jonathan Shearon – Columbia, Missouri, Qualified at 70.3 St Croix, one of the top 70.3 AG athletes in N.A.

Fred Uytengsu – Makati City, Manila, Philippines. Ex-USC swimmer, and the principal of the Philippines Ironman 70.3

 

Coach Paul

Chris Thomas – Easton CT, LifeSport Coach Chris qualified at 70.3 Buffalo Springs and was the top age grouper in the race

Tatiana Vertiz – San Diego, CA Qualified at 70.3 Honu by winning her age group and returns to Kona to defend her title

Karen Smith - Bermuda Qualified at Ironman UK.  Smith, who is a mother and works full time, won her Age group and finished an astonishing 8th overall including the pros.

Ashley Clifford - Carmel, IN, Qualified at IM Louisville, including an amazing 3:21 marathon, 3rd overall amateur in the race. First trip to Kona

Larry Ocampo – Makati City, Manila, Qualified at 70.3 Philippines.

Fiona Ottiger – Makati City, Manila, Qualified at 70.3 Philippines.

Sharon Colgin – Birmingham, AL, lottery

Marcel Robin - Germany Qualified at IM Lanzarote

 

Coach Mark

Shannon Donley - Anchorage, AK Qualified at 70.3 Buffalo Springs, a mother of two and a teacher

Eric Seuss - Vancouver, BC Qualified at IM Canada by winning his age group. He is a landscaper from Vancouver and is off to do his first IM Hawaii.

Mark Shorter - Vancouver BC, LifeSport Coach Mark qualified at IM Coeur d'Alene He will be competing in IM Hawaii for his 7th time (36th Ironman).
