Groves Wins Seatle 1/2 Marathon
Oct 06, 2004
After the disappointment of being close to making the Olympic team, I took a bit of a break from training this summer to recharge. This time away gave me a chance to think about what it is going to take to become one of the best Olympic distance triathletes. Having never really worked on my running, Lance and I decided this Fall was a perfect time to take a break from racing triathlons and develop my running (although I had planned on taking this "break", 3 ITU races still seemed to sneak in there…).

Lieto Checks in afer Ralphs Half
Oct 06, 2004
By Chris Lieto
It feels good to be back. After 10 months with no racing due to a stress fracture I am back in the game -- and starting out well. Ralphs Half Ironman was my first race back to test my fitness and my progress before I head out to Arizona for the Ironman in two weeks. This weekend was a little rough due to the rain and cold weather. I can’t remember the last time I was that cold.

Coaches Diary: Last Camp
On to Geneva
Sep 06, 2004

TEST TEST 1,2,3 TEST FOR START

After the exuberance of the opening ceremonies (and a 2:30am bedtime!), we managed to get out early to the race swim venue (45minutes away from the athletes village) for a swim and bike. It is hot here -- 35+ Celsius. The ocean is very salty and the athletes feel quite buoyant out there. The sun beats down on the steep (18% grade) climb on the bike, and the run of course.

Racing for a Cure
Bentley Taking on CF
Sep 06, 2004
By Teresa Deveaux
Lisa Bentley and Tracey Richardson come from opposite sides of the world and are at either end of the athletic spectrum: one an elite professional athlete with seven Ironman wins to her name and the other a "back of the pack age grouper." Yet both these women are powered by a passion and a shared clear, simple vision; both will be competing at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii on October 16 to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Marlowe Breathing on Own
Junior Tri Star Still Showing Little Brain Activity
Aug 06, 2004

Terry McMahon, a retired nurse, has been liaising with the Marlowe family after Sean was injured in a car accident in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in mid-July.

Below is McMahon's latest briefing on the talented junior triathlete's medical condition.

I have just spoken with Sean’s Mom. He is breathing on his own, ventilator assisted. They are doing a tracheostomy on Monday to assist his breathing. He has had another pneumonia, which is being treated. They may fix his jaw, as it is a possible source of infection.

Groves' Olympic Journey
Talented Canadian Gains Valuable Experience
Aug 06, 2004
By Lauren Groves
It's now been a week since my Olympic trials in Edmonton, and I feel as though I can finally write a report without my rollercoaster of post-race emotions taking over. Although my trials in didn't go as well as I would have liked, I have had so many incredible opportunities and experiences over the past year that are too important not to reflect upon and share with others. In some ways, I think these experiences are more valuable than the trials themselves.

Count Down to Athens
Olympic Odyssey Begins
Aug 06, 2004
I am in the air one hour outside of Athens. It seems like a long time from the 2004 Sydney Olympics to now, but suddenly the Games are here. I managed to get upgraded to business class from Toronto to London -- what a difference that makes. Baked salmon for dinner rather than mystery chicken-product.

Smith's August Journal
The Olympic Dream
Aug 06, 2004
By Lucy Smith
I tie my white track spikes carefully, pulling the laces tight. I am warmed up and ready to race. Six months of preparation for this one event, and here it is, 10 minutes away on a warm and windless Victoria evening. At a signal a marshal directs us to move onto the track for the 5000m of the 2004 Olympic Track and Field Trials. Walking through the tunnel, I am suddenly moved to tears and my vision blurs. How many times in my life have I walked onto a track, feeling fit, strong, ready to perform, and nervous?

By Lisa Bentley/www.lisabentley.com
Subaru Ironman Canada took on special meaning to me this year. It has always been a special race - it was my first Ironman, it is the best Ironman and it is in my home country. But, the ultimate decision to race IMC came down to this. I wanted my parents to experience all that they taught me to be.
